Visas and border passing is managed in different ways. In Dar es Salaam there is chaos, cost 50$ each and if you do not have dollars you are asked to go through the custom to withdraw Shillings and change to dollars and then return back to pay. A total of 6 persons were involved in putting the visas into the passport and it took 90 minutes. At the Tazara train we were met by some friendly ladies that efficiently provided 4 visas (visas for under aged was not required) for 50$ each, this took less than 5 minutes, and no extra documents where filled in. Be aware that if you do not have dollars, then there is a guy at the train selling dollars for Kwacha or Shilling. At the Zimbabwe border we had to fill in a visa application (registration), and the total process took 20 minutes with 30$ per visa.
Charging
Charging electronic devises without access to European sockets (only British) is no problem. Just use a pen or similar to push down the tap in the grounding slot and then insert the European plug in the remaining slots:)
Day 32 Goodbye Africa – Hello Asia
Gloria made our stay in Johannesburg very nice. Thank you sooo much – miss you already!
On the evening of the 28th of July we left Johannesburg to go to Tokyo in Japan. We had a loooong journey in front of us. We spent altogether 18 hours in the air, only changing planes in Doha, Qatar. Arriving Tokyo was a breathtaking experience. As we arrived late in the evening, we watched the city grow bigger and bigger under the plane until we landed. The city looked like a billion stars… The following days we were about to discover a beautiful, diverse, clean, funny, well organized, low crime, interesting and amazing city with polite, helpful and nice people. Among many other things, we saw Supermario and his friends drive peacefully through the center of Tokyo one saturday morning. We all just loved the city from day one. 🙂 Continue reading

Day 26 to 30 Johannesburg in South-Africa
Downtown Joburg, South Africa
Before coming here we were advised to be careful both by people we had met and the internet about safety issues in this town. We have found Joburg to be quite nice and overcoming as long as you stay in the center or visit different places with guides that know the city well. The statue of Gandhi in the very center was a big and positive surprise to me. What a guy! 🙂 Going to Soweto and Pretoria were two other highlights while staying in Johannesburg. The contrasts were enormous between the poor and the rich people and areas in this town. Visiting the Apartheid Museum was magnificent. In addition – the artistic area in Joburg was a very nice place to visit as well as the amusement park “Gold reef city”. Continue reading
Day 25 Bulawayo to Johannesburg
Saying goodbye to Ellen and Pauline in Bulawayo… We will miss you both!

Today we were lucky enough to get our e-mail started… We discovered that we had got an e-mail from Air Zimbabwe the evening before that told us that our flight was cancelled and replaced by another – only 3 hours earlier than planned. We had to hurry get a taxi and get as fast as possible to the airport. Long story short – we made it – and we ended up in Johannesburg in the afternoon. South-Africa – here we come! Continue reading
Day 23 and 24 Exploring Bulawayo
Bulawayo townhall

For two whole days we are learning about Bulawayo and the history of Zimbabwe. There are about 2 million people living in this town, maybe more. The city center is well-organized with broad roads and fancy boutiques. The people are very friendly and polite. The official currency is american dollars and all we have met speak English. The weather has been quite varm during daytime, but cold (down to 5 degrees) during nights. There are beautiful parks in the outskirts of the city center and the food is excellent. We are having a great time! Continue reading
Day 21 and 22 Zambia to Zimbabwe
Walking over the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe
We started our day eating a late breakfast and relaxing in Livingstone. We then took a taxi to the border to Zimbabwe (nearby Victoria Falls). We walked over the bridge and border to Zimbabwe with our backpacks and other luggage. We then spent a day in Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. In the evening we took the night train to Bulawayo in the middle of Zimbabwe. The following day we relaxed walking the streets in the outskirts of Bulawayo nearby the villa we rented for three nights.
Dollar
I need a dollar, a dollar, a dollar is what I need…..
- US$ is the only currency that is accepted across the countries in Africa.
- It is required to pay for visas when crossing country borders
- There is always an exchange office available, but often not an ATM
Day 19 and 20 Victoria falls and Livingstone
Victoria falls in double rainbows
We were sooooo looking forward to visiting Victoria falls. Emeric Philip decided he wanted to bungee jump as well. I am impressed he dared to do it… For two days we ate lunch in Livingstone center and went into a museum as well – we had a smashing time! During nighttime we ate dinner in the center before returning home to the lodge.
Emeric is bungee jumping in Victoria falls
The whole family is walking into the rainbow…
